Hawthorn is a member of the Rosaceae family, which is small, shrub-like tree with sharp thorns. Its berries along with its leaves have been used in modern herbal preparations for years. Specifically, Hawthorn has been used as a natural approach to helping prevent heart disease. Studies have shown that Hawthorn is used to protect the heart and vascular system through dilation of the veins and arteries, regulation of heart rate, and lowering of cholesterol levels.
